MOUNT TOUBKAL

Updated: Nov 20

Mount Toubkal, towering at 4,167 metres (13,671 feet), is the highest peak in North Africa and a highlight of Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. Known for its rugged landscapes, rocky ridges, and breathtaking views, the Toubkal trek is a must-do for any adventurer. This 4-day itinerary guides you through an unforgettable journey, blending physical challenge with cultural immersion in the heart of Morocco.

With expert local guides to handle every detail, from meals and accommodation to navigation and support, all you need to do is enjoy the journey.

Day 1: Aguersioual Village to Tachedirt Village

Start your trek in Aguersioual, a traditional Berber village surrounded by lush fields and mountain landscapes. Your guides will meet you here and lead you on a scenic climb up and over the Matat Pass. Passing through remote Berber villages and terraced farmland, you’ll reach Tachedirt village, one of the highest settlements in the Atlas Mountains. Here, you’ll spend the night in a guesthouse, enjoying a traditional Moroccan meal and relaxing in the peaceful mountain setting.

Day 2: Tachedirt Village to Imlil

Today, set off from Tachedirt and head toward Imlil, a lively mountain village and a popular base for Toubkal trekkers. You’ll trek through lush valleys and across beautiful mountain paths, passing waterfalls and terraced slopes. Arriving in Imlil by late afternoon, you’ll have time to explore the village or simply relax at your guesthouse. Your guides will handle your meals and all arrangements, ensuring you’re well-rested for the next leg of the journey.

Day 3: Imlil to Toubkal Refuge

After breakfast, begin your trek from Imlil toward Toubkal Refuge. This route is one of the most scenic, taking you through the stunning Mizane Valley and up rocky paths that offer sweeping views of the surrounding peaks. After 5-7 hours, you’ll reach the refuge, located at around 3,200 metres, where you’ll spend the night. Your guides will prepare a nourishing dinner, and you can relax, share stories with fellow trekkers, and prepare for tomorrow’s summit attempt.

Day 4: Toubkal Summit and Return to Imlil

Start the day early for the ascent to Mount Toubkal’s summit. The climb is challenging, with steep, rocky paths, but your efforts are rewarded with incredible views of the Atlas Mountains and the distant Sahara Desert. After celebrating at the peak, begin your descent back to the refuge for a short break and some refreshments. Then continue down to Imlil, where you’ll complete your trek and reflect on the experience over a traditional Moroccan meal. Your guides will manage all the logistics and ensure a smooth journey back.

Essential Tips:

1. Fitness: Though accessible for many, the trek requires good fitness due to steep sections and high altitude.

2. Acclimatisation: Spending extra time in Imlil on Day 1 or 2 can help adjust to the altitude.

3. Gear: Layered clothing, sturdy boots, and trekking poles are essential for comfort and safety.

Trekking Mount Toubkal over four days offers an unforgettable blend of natural beauty, physical challenge, and cultural connection. With knowledgeable guides handling every detail, it’s a journey that will leave you with lifelong memories of Morocco’s stunning Atlas Mountains.

We highly recommend adding a sunrise hot air balloon trip to your adventure either side of the Toubkal Trek - a truly serene experience.
