Hiking checklist: What you need to know before hitting the trail

Before you head out, be sure to pack these essential tools and supplies for your outdoor excursion.... just in case things go sour!

Setting off on a hiking or backpacking trip far from civilisation can be a thrilling experience. However, it's worth acknowledging that nature can be harsh, and things can quickly take a turn for the worse. You may find yourself disorientated, dehydrated, trembling, or drenched to the bone. Therefore, to avoid becoming a warning tale, you'll want to ensure that your rucksack is equipped with all the necessary items. Because, let's be honest, when it comes to survival, forgetting the essentials is not an alternative - unless, of course, you're interested in a real-life version of The Hunger Games.

Here we list the Top 10 things we think you should pack before leaving the house:

#1 - Navigational tools

For those venturing into the wild, there are five trusty tools to help you navigate like a pro: a paper map (yes, they still exist!), a compass (oldie but a goodie), an altimeter app (it's like having a mini mountain on your phone), a GPS app (thank you, technology!), and a way to call for help (because we all need backup sometimes). Just remember, bring spare batteries or a power bank, or risk getting lost in more ways than one.

#2 - Headtorch

Lost in the woods with no light is a hiker's worst nightmare. That's why, no matter the length of your trek, it's always wise to pack a trusty headlamp or flashlight. Sure, your phone may have a flashlight feature, but trust us, you don't want to be stuck with a dead battery when you need it the most. So, make sure your headlamp is juiced up and bring extra batteries - you never know when you'll need to light up the night

#3 - Sun Protection

Don't let the sun catch you unprepared! Whether you're hiking in the blazing heat of summer or the chilly winds of winter, sun protection is a must. Slather on some sunscreen, throw on some shades, and don't forget to don a stylish sun hat to keep those rays at bay. And if you're trekking at higher altitudes, where the air is thin and the sun is strong, protecting your skin becomes even more crucial. So, pack smart and protect that precious skin of yours!

#4 - First Aid

Don't leave home without it - no, we're not talking about your credit card, we're talking about a first aid kit! Even short hikes can lead to unexpected scrapes and bruises, so it's always wise to pack a simple kit with essentials like bandages, gauze, and antiseptic. Of course, if you're planning a longer journey into the wild, you'll want to beef up your kit with more supplies like painkillers, insect repellent, and medication for your personal needs. So, whether you buy a ready-made kit or curate your own, just remember - a well-stocked first aid kit could mean the difference between a minor mishap and a major disaster.

#5 - Knife (and other necessary tools)

Every seasoned adventurer knows that a trusty blade or versatile multi-tool is a must-have. But let's not forget the ultimate problem-solver: duct tape. Wrap it around your trusty trekking pole or water bottle for easy access, and toss in some paracord and adhesive patches for those unexpected gear malfunctions. Because when the going gets tough, the tough get creative.

#6 - Shelter

When it comes to shelter, it's all about context. If you're just taking a quick day hike, leave the heavy-duty tents at home and opt for a trusty tarp instead. But let's not get caught with our guard down - even a short hike can take a turn for the worse, so consider packing an emergency blanket or lightweight bivy to stay cozy in a pinch. And if you're a seasoned backpacker, you probably already know the drill - tent is life.

#7 - Fire

Let's face it, we don't head out into the great outdoors expecting to get lost or stranded - but life has a funny way of throwing us curveballs. So, it's always wise to have a trick or two up your sleeve. When it comes to survival, a reliable fire can be a lifesaver - but don't rely on traditional matches and tinder, especially if you're venturing above the treeline or into the snow. Instead, opt for a trusty backpacking stove and lightweight pot to heat up some hot water and keep those shivers at bay.

#8 - Food

When it comes to hiking, there's one cardinal rule: never underestimate your hunger. Even on a quick day hike, you never know when that grumbling stomach will rear its ugly head. So, make sure you're packing plenty of high-calorie snacks like trail mix, cookies, and other goodies to keep you going. And if you're planning on a multi-day adventure, be sure to pack a couple extra meals to keep those energy levels soaring.

#9 - Clothes

I'm about to share a top-secret tip that'll keep you warm and toasty on any hike. No matter what time of year or how long you plan to be out there, always pack an extra layer. Trust me, even summer sun can quickly turn into chilly breeze or torrential rain. So, whether it's a cozy fleece, a trusty rain jacket or a lightweight puffer, be prepared for any weather condition by checking the forecast and bringing that extra layer just in case.

#10 - Water

Water is the elixir of life, especially when you're out there hiking. Trust me, there's nothing worse than feeling parched and dehydrated, especially in the warmer months. So, be sure to pack at least half a liter of water for every hour you plan to be on the move - and if you're heading out on an epic trek, bring even more. Remember, it's better to have too much water than not enough, so keep those hydration levels up and avoid the risk of feeling like a shriveled-up raisin.

Whilst embarking on a hiking expedition, customising The Ten Essentials to your preference is acceptable. However, risking a lack of vital equipment for the sake of a lighter load is a trek in the wrong direction. Remember, failing to prepare is preparing to fail.
