About the event

Knoydart is cut off from the UK mainland road network, meaning access can only be made either by boat or by foot. The rugged and remote landscape is one of the primary attractions of the area; and with four munros and numerous corbetts within the Knoydart boundary, hillwalkers flock from far and wide to make their ascents. We start in Glenfinnan and over the course of three days make our way through the wilds until we reach the Knoydart Peninsula, before finally crossing to Mallaig by ferry and jumping the train back to Fort William.

Difficulty: Moderate Approximate Duration: 3 Nights

ITINERARY

DAY 1 - MONDAY

We’ll meet up with our Mountain Leader at Fort William railway station at 7.30am and after a brief chat and kit check we’ll board the West Highland Express, considered by many as the most scenic railway journey in the world, to Glenfinnan.

Once off, we’ll start by visiting Prince Charlie’s monument and proceed by first walking under the Glenfinnan Viaduct, made world famous by Harry Potter and the Hogwart’s Express!

It’s then up and over the Beach a’Chaorainn Pass and down to camp in the Glen of Dessarry, by the river of the same name, taking in the unique beauty and tranquility of this remote location.

DAY 2 - TUESDAY

After what should have been an exhilarating and inspiring first day, today continues to spoil us with beauty and adventure as our scenery becomes more rugged, following the River Dessarry and leaving the forest, we steadily climb the pass of Bealach an Lagain Duibh and past the upland waters of Lochan a’Mahaim, before following the River Finiskaig down to Sourlies, where we make camp on the shores of Loch Nevis and take in the spectacular and majestic views all the way out to the sea.

DAY 3 - WEDNESDAY

On our final day, we briefly skirt round the shore and thus we have entered Knoydart, as we now climb the steepest and last ascent of our memorable adventure up through the pass between Meall Bhasiter and Sgurr Sgeithe. Thereafter we are homeward bound descending gently down through Gleann Meadail and then crossing the river into Inverie to our more solid accommodation of Knoydart Bunkhouse and a welcome celebratory drink and meal for those who fancy, at the remotest pub in mainland Britain, The Old Forge!

DAY 4 - THURSDAY

After breakfast, we take the ferry to Mallaig and the West Highland Express back to Fort William.

A unique and memorable experience not to be missed …
