About the event
The Snowdon Horseshoe has to be the most classic of all routes, especially for the connoisseur. Standing tallest at 1085m, Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) is the jewel in the crown of Wales’ highest mountains. It’s near perfect pyramidical shape, surrounded by classic geology, glacial lakes, massive cliffs and the legendary knife edge ridge of Crib Gogh, makes for absolutely breathtaking scenery.
We start at the Pen-y-Pass carpark and follow the Pyg Track, before diverting to start what should be a really enjoyable scramble up to the knife edge ridge of Crib Goch, above the legendary glacial lakes of Llyn Llyndaw and Glaslyn below to our left. We now traverse across this legendary ridge before continuing our ascent to the top. The scramble itself is not so technical at all, but especially on the ridge itself, a head for heights is required as there is considerable exposure, although your fully qualified mountain leader will be there to help and encourage you.
We eventually summit Snowdon to see a spectacular panorama of stunning scenery from the roof top of Wales, including this unique route which we have taken to the top! We descend following the less trodden Y Lliwedd Path. You start to forget that you’re on one of the busiest mountains in the UK, which is certainly one the many highlights of the route, with some more fantastic sections of scrambling to be had. Although this section of ridge is not difficult, it is exposed with steep slopes either side. The last part of the horseshoe sees us join the Miner’s Track for an easy stroll with impressive views of behind and the southern slopes of the Glyderau mountains directly ahead.
Back at the start you can enjoy celebratory drinks and snacks at Mallory’s Cafe, you’ve certainly deserved it before jumping in your car or the sherpa bus back down to Llanberis. Join us for an unforgettable Snowdon adventure with your mountain guide and a socialable group of like minded people!
Difficulty: Challenging Approximate Duration: 8-9 hours Distance: 18km / 11 Miles Ascent / Descent: 1,025m / 1,025m
