About the event
This fantastic grade 1 scramble, Senior’s Gully, is located in the fantastic Glyderau mountain range, which is situated in Ogwen Valley, a stunning part of the Snowdonia National Park in north Wales. This wide glacial valley is surrounded by soaring mountains, and features placid lakes as well as historic towns and industrial heritage.
We begin by making our way around Llyn Idwal, the picturesque glacial lake, to the beginning of Senior’s Gully, where we start our ascent on a relatively steep broken path encountering some scree and sometimes crossing over the little streams we might encounter. Eventually we begin our scramble proper and on the way up are faced with classic scrambling, which in places have a little technical aspect to them giving rise to it’s grade 1 status.
It doesn’t take too long for us to reach the top of Senior’s Gully, where we’ll stop for a short break to take in what we’ve just accomplished, before continuing to the summit of Glyder Fawr. The views from here are spectacular, taking in the adjacent Carneddau mountain range and a clear view of where we’ll be descending, via the unmistakable Devil’s Kitchen.
A fulfilling mountain day, for those looking for something a little more interesting, challenging and away from the hustle and bustle of Snowdon and as good an area as anywhere in Snowdonia!
Difficulty: Challenging Approximate Duration: 6-8 hours Distance: 8km / 5 Miles Ascent / Descent: 737m / 737m
